Katavi National Park

Located in remote western Tanzania, Katavi National Park is one of the country’s most pristine and least-visited wilderness areas, offering an unfiltered and truly authentic safari experience. Covering 4,471 km² and officially established in 1974, the park remains a hidden gem, named after the Wabende spirit Katabi, whose sacred tamarind tree still receives offerings from local communities

During the dry season (May to October), the park comes alive as wildlife congregates around the few remaining water sources. Vast herds of buffalo, elephants, and zebras dominate the plains, while predators such as lions and leopards are drawn to the abundance of prey. With over 400 bird species recorded, the park also becomes a haven for migratory birds from November to April. One of Katavi’s most spectacular highlights is the dramatic battles between hippos in the shrinking pools—a raw display of nature rarely seen elsewhere. Accessible by air, road and train.
